A high-level overview of what MedTrak can offer your practice

Basis for Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT)

  • Adaptation - extinguish symptoms provoked by motion or visual stimulation by altering VOR gain

  • Compensation - progressive waning of symptoms through CNS mechanisms

  • Restoration - allow inner ear mechanisms to function correctly

VRT Outcomes

  • Reestablish function of vestibular system

  • Amplification of VOR control

  • Fine-tuning ocular motor skills

  • Improve balance

  • Better postural control

  • Increase movement strategies

Patient Factors for VRT

  • Extent & efficacy of VRT limited by:

  • Other sensory systems (vision, proprioception)

  • Physical integrity and motor skills

  • CNS integrity

  • Others -- physical health, decision-making skills, cognitive abilities, age, memory, psychological and anxiety disorders

Vestibular Anatomy & Physiology

  • Complex input from multiple systems

  • Inner ears

  • Eyes

  • Brain

  • Spinal Column

  • Skin and Muscles

Equipment

  • Video ENG: measures eye movements with infra-red video cameras to determine the presence of nystagmus

  • Fifteen different tests are conducted during the exam

  • Sway, balance and fall prediction

    • Measures how stable the patient is on perturbed vs flat surfaces

      • Determines their limits of stability

      • Compares the finding to normative data

Video Eye Tracking

  • Developed by Eye Dynamics, Inc. with the cooperation of the House Ear Institute in Los Angeles, Ca.

  • U.S. Patent 4,815,329

  • Uses a tiny high resolution camera to measure eye movements

    • No skin preparation

    • No calibration

    • No discomfort

    • No electrodes

    • No biological noise

    • Fast and simple testing

    • Allows for continuous observation of eye movements.

    Vestibular Testing -- ENG

    • Gaze and spontaneous nystagmus

    • Ocular motor (saccade, pursuit, optokinetic)

    • Look for CNS dysfunction vs. PVS lesion

    • VOR ( head autorotation)

    • Differentiate between CNS & PVS, calculate gain

    • Positional and positioning

    • Test for BPPV and other positional disorders

    • Caloric

    • Examine function of peripheral vestibular system
